Smart Card Operating Systems

Small Machine Operating System (SMOS)

  • SMOS is a true multi application operating system.

  • It is capable of supporting more than one application resident on the card simultaneously. In addition, up to four applications can be concurrently selected.

  • Such applications and data belonging to them are protected and isolated from each other.

  • Offers a flexible ownership model where a single owner controls the entire card while trusted third parties may remotely load applications.

  • Chip card suppliers are given a choice of silicon manufacturers, including ST, Hitachi, Philips, Infineon and Atmel, which can be pre-loaded with SMOS.

  • Applications written for any one silicon manufacturer can be shared with another.

  • Fully compliant with ISO 7816 - Parts 3 and 4.

This version has the flexibility of interoperability which makes the smart card versatile in accessing multiple applications. As such, the single card would have several functionalities, which operate within a single chip environment.

Iris Card Operating System (ICOS)

  • Supports a multitude of functions within a single card, e.g. ID, access control, and loyalty program.
  • The operating system has been licensed to a Malaysian company, and is currently used in the electronic passport of Malaysia.
  • The ICOS have been applied in other areas like university campus ID cards and employee ID cards.
  • Fully compliant with ISO 7816 - Parts 3 and 4.
